The Alabama Marine Mammal Stranding Network (ALMMSN) and Manatee Sighting Network (MSN) held the first volunteer training of 2019 on the USS Alabama Battleship on the causeway in Mobile.
More than 40 people attended the training the last week of January to learn about ALMMSN response procedures for live and dead marine mammals. This training also provided members of our coastal communities with basic knowledge of marine mammal biology and proper viewing procedures. ALMMSN encouraged attendees to use this information to be good stewards for marine mammals in Alabama.
As we move into the spring boating seasons on the Gulf of Mexico, MSN wants to remind boaters to please be watchful of manatees and report all manatee sightings to 1-866-493-5803. The community can report any injured, live stranded, or dead dolphins or whales to 877-WHALE-HELP.
ALMMSN would like to thank the Battleship staff for use of the ship as a unique training space.
